Setup Guide: MissCall step by step
MissCall needs a few Android permissions to run reliably — and above all an exemption from battery optimization. This guide walks you through everything from installation to the final test, including the quirks of Xiaomi, Samsung, Huawei and other phones. The whole setup takes about 5 minutes and only needs to be done once.
Step 1: Download and install the app
Download the app at misscall.io/download (button or QR code). Because it installs directly (outside Google Play), Android will ask on first opening of the downloaded file whether to allow installation from this source:
- Open the downloaded
misscall.apkfile (notification bar or Downloads folder). - Android shows "Unknown apps can't be installed from this source" → tap Settings.
- Enable Allow from this app (you are allowing your browser, e.g. Chrome).
- Go back and tap Install.
If your phone offers to scan the app with Play Protect, let it — the app is safe and passes the check.
Step 2: Sign in to your account
After the first launch, sign in with the same e-mail and password as on misscall.io (or create an account directly in the app). The app downloads your templates and rules from the cloud — from that moment it also works offline.
Step 3: Permissions — what the app needs and why
On first launch, MissCall asks for permissions. Confirm all of them with "Allow" — each one has a specific purpose:
- 📞 Phone — so the app knows someone is calling and that you didn't pick up. Nothing works without this.
- 📋 Call log — to learn the caller's number it should reply to. Since Android 9 this is a separate permission (it used to be part of Phone).
- ✉️ SMS — to send the automatic reply from your SIM card.
- 🔔 Notifications — to inform you about sent replies and its status (Android 13 and newer).
Accidentally denied something? No problem — grant it manually: Settings → Apps → MissCall → Permissions and choose "Allow" for each item. The app does not read your other SMS, does not track your location and sends nothing except the replies you set up.
The "Restricted setting" message (Android 13 and newer) 🔐
Because MissCall installs outside Google Play, Android 13+ may show the message "Restricted setting — For your security, this setting is currently unavailable" when granting certain permissions. This is not an error — you just need to allow restricted settings for MissCall once:
- Open Settings → Apps → MissCall.
- Tap ⋮ (three dots) in the top right corner.
- Choose "Allow restricted settings" and confirm (your phone may ask for a PIN or fingerprint).
- Go back and grant the permission again — it will now go through.
Important: the "Allow restricted settings" item appears in the ⋮ menu only after you have encountered the message — if you don't see it, first try granting the permission and repeat the steps once the message appears.
Step 4: Battery — the most important setting ⚠️
Android saves battery by "putting apps to sleep" in the background. If it puts MissCall to sleep, automatic replies stop working — by far the most common cause of problems. Give the app an exemption:
- Open Settings → Apps → MissCall → Battery.
- Choose Unrestricted (on some phones "No restrictions" / "Don't optimize").
The app asks for this exemption itself on first launch — if you confirmed the dialog, you're done, just verify this step. Battery consumption will not increase: MissCall does not run continuously, it only wakes up on an incoming call.
Step 5: Manufacturer-specific settings
Some manufacturers add their own, even more aggressive battery saving on top of Android. Find your manufacturer and follow the steps:
Xiaomi / Redmi / POCO (MIUI, HyperOS)
- Settings → Apps → Manage apps → MissCall → Autostart → enable.
- Same screen → Battery saver → No restrictions.
- Open the recent apps view, find MissCall, long-press it and tap the lock 🔒 — the app won't be killed during memory cleanups.
Samsung (One UI)
- Settings → Device care → Battery → Background usage limits.
- Make sure MissCall is not in "Sleeping apps" or "Deep sleeping apps".
- Add MissCall to "Never sleeping apps".
- We recommend turning off Settings → Device care → Battery → Adaptive battery (optional, but improves reliability).
Huawei / Honor (EMUI, MagicOS)
- Settings → Battery → App launch.
- For MissCall, turn off "Manage automatically" and in manual settings enable all three options: Auto-launch, Secondary launch, Run in background.
Oppo / Realme / OnePlus (ColorOS, OxygenOS)
- Settings → Apps → MissCall → Battery usage → allow Background activity and Auto-launch.
- In the recent apps view, long-press MissCall and choose Lock.
Vivo (Funtouch OS)
- Settings → Battery → Background power management → MissCall → Allow background running.
- iManager → App manager → Autostart → enable for MissCall.
Google Pixel, Motorola, Sony and others
Step 4 (Battery → Unrestricted) is enough — these manufacturers don't have their own app killers.
Step 6: Verify everything works
- Enable any reply in the app (e.g. the universal template).
- Ask anyone to call you from another number, and don't answer (let it ring out, don't reject).
- The caller should receive your SMS within a few seconds.
- You'll see the sent message in the app's History and, after sync, in the web dashboard.
Tip: the web dashboard also includes Diagnostics, which checks your phone's connection status.
Troubleshooting: SMS replies are not being sent
Go through this checklist top to bottom — in 95% of cases the culprit is in the first three items:
- Battery: Settings → Apps → MissCall → Battery = Unrestricted? (step 4)
- Manufacturer: did you complete the steps for your phone? (step 5 — especially Xiaomi and Huawei)
- Permissions: Phone, Call log and SMS = Allowed? (step 3)
- Restricted settings: did the "Restricted setting" message appear while granting? Allow them via ⋮ in the app details. (step 3)
- Active rule: do you have a reply enabled that applies to the current day and time?
- Credit/plan: can your SIM card send SMS? (prepaid cards with no credit won't send)
- Phone restart: the app starts automatically after a reboot — if not, check "Autostart" for your manufacturer.
